Shakshuka-Moroccan Eggs with Tomato

This dish called Shakshuka in Arabic and it means “mess”.

 It is one of the most known traditional dishes in the Middle East.

I remember growing up watching my mom make Shakshuka.  I helped her prepare it so much, that I can make it in my sleep.

The Harissa (a paste made from red-hot chilies, cumin, and ton of other spices) is what gives it that signature delicious taste and depth of flavors.

All I can say about this dish is delicious!

.1 large Onion minced

.6 cloves of garlic minced

.6 Roma tomato minced

.7 large Eggs

.4 tbsp olive oil

.2 tbsp Butter

.1 tbsp Salt

.2 tsp Black Pepper

.1 tsp Cinnamon

.1 tsp crushed Red Pepper

.½ tbsp Harissa paste

.1 cup white Wine

.3 tbsp chopped fresh Cilantro

In a large sauté pan on high heat add olive oil and butter, add minced onion, salt and black pepper and sauté for about 3-4 minutes or until golden.

Add minced garlic and sauté for few seconds; add tomato, crushed red pepper, cinnamon, harissa paste, stir and cook for 5 minutes.  Add white wine and cook for another 5 minutes.

With wooden spoon make seven wells, crack each egg in separate well, cover, and cook on low heat until the eggs are set, for about three minutes. Sprinkle the chopped cilantro on top and serve it family style with warm pita bread. Enjoy!

  1. I ADORE you! I have wanted to know how to make this dish for over five years now and never found a recipe that sounded right. THIS one does and will be made as quickly as I can get my hands on a few ingredients!

    • Thanks!! Yes you can, use 1 tbsp tomato paste, 1/2 teaspoon cumin and 1 teaspoon hot chili powder or half if you’re not into very spicy food, mix well and cook with the onion in order to cook the tomato paste and just keep going with the recipe! Let me know how it turns out 🙂
